Edgy and feminine: Ann-Sofie Back

Ann-Sofie Back Atelje requires no introduction. A Central Saint Martins’ graduate, she has been presenting her own ready-to-wear women collection since 2001. Sophisticated, sculptural and muted, her aesthetics are distinctly Swedish. However, there is a side of her work that relates to pop culture and this is evident in her role as Creative Director for the label Cheap Monday.

It is her own labels, Ann-Sofie Back and Back, which appeals to me. Almost minimalist, the collection is edgy and feminine at the same time. I picked up her lookbook for the BACK Spring / Summer 2011 collection when I was in Seoul’s Daily Project store. Below are scanned pages from the lookbook. Sorry, I had to fold it to stick it into my bag!

Ann-Sofie Back is also participating in the fourth edition of the Arnhem Mode Biennale in the Netherlands from 1st June to 3rd July 2011. Exhibited at three locations in Arnhem (including the Museum for Modern Art), the Biennale offers fashion designers both creative space and dedicated physical spaces for all forms of artistic installations, displays and presentations. Other designers and creatives taking part in this year’s edition include Iris van Herpen, Maison Martin Margiela, Nicholas Kirkwood, Preen, Prada, Raf Simons, Rodarte and many others.

Stay tuned.
