Jean-Charles de Castelbajac – slightly wacky but yet so wonderful

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac is a magician.  His works are fun, theatrical, sophisticated, refined, dramatic and bizarre all at the same time.  We talk about having a sense of uniformity in each collection but Castelbajac rolls out unique and diverse pieces in one collection.  The one thing that is constant is Castelbajac’s reference to characters from fairy-tales and his use of vibrant colours.  He seems to live in a different world; a universe where reality does not apply, where Snow White and the Wicked Witch are best friends, where Cinderella’s tea party is as exciting as a Halloween party- a world I wished I lived in.

Besides being a designer, Castelbajac plays multiple roles.  He is a conceptual painter, he has written a book, composed a song and started a concept store to encourage young designers.  I am in awe and inspired by his imagination and creativity.  It is a visual feast for anyone, even if you do not have the slightest fondness for art or fashion, you will find the runway shows amazing.  Below are selected pieces from Castelbajac’s past collections:

As you can see, there are pieces that are very wearable and pieces that are more conceptual.  It’s easy to pick the pieces that are more wearable but where is the fun in that?
