Yves Saint Laurent: L’Amour Fou

Watching Yohji Yamamoto’s ‘I have a dream’ last week was a quick cleansing from the week’s hectic schedule. Personally what struck was his quiet determination to create beautiful clothes. Yohji Yamamoto said  ” I’m not interested in fashion, generally. I’m just interested in how to cut clothing. I’m a simple dressmaker. I’m not a fashion designer. I’m not following the trend. I’m not checking the merchandise. I’m not checking what is selling good.”

Now, there’s another documentary out that I am interested to catch is Yves Saint Laurent: L’Amour Fou. The documentary by Pierre Thoretton, (See interviews with him about the film here and here.) unveils the relationship of Yves Saint Laurent and his long time business and life partner Pierre Bergé.

Showing the removal of their private collection (collected over their four decades together) from their Paris apartment in the Rue de Babylone, and houses in Morocco and Normandy, for Christie’s three day event ‘Auction of the Century’ held in February 2009. Their collection includes works from Sénoufo, Goya, Duchamp, Picasso, Matisse, Brancusi, Mondrian, and Eileen Gray furniture.

The documentary also includes ‘candid interviews with Bergé and Saint Laurent’s closest friends including Betty Catroux and muse Loulou de la Falaise. As well as archive footage of catwalk shows, parties, funerals and celebrities – Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger and Catherine Deneuve all make appearances – there is footage of Saint Laurent himself throughout the years; nervously facing the camera to discuss his latest collections.’
